Geo-Multiphysics Research Consortium

Introduction

The Geo-Multiphysics Research Consortium (GMRC), established in 1999 within the Department of Geophysics at the Colorado School of Mines, is an industry-funded research group. Since its inception, the GMRC has become a leading research consortium in the fields of gravity, gravity gradiometry, and magnetic geophysics. Our current sponsors include a broad spectrum of petroleum and mining companies, service providers, and instrument developers.

GMRC Mandate

  • Focus on advancing exploration geophysics and production monitoring.
  • Develop innovative techniques for processing gravity, magnetic, electrical, and electromagnetic (EM) data.
  • Create and refine inversion methodologies.
  • Conduct feasibility and case studies to understand application challenges.
  • Transfer the resulting technology to our sponsors.

GMRC Design

To maximize the consortium’s value, the GMRC is designed to bring together leading experts and companies from across the energy sector. Our collaborative environment encourages open discussions, presentations, and teamwork between consortium members, which include:

  • Mines faculty and students focusing research, development, and the application of exploration and production geophysics.
  • Prominent instrumentation developers advancing both current and next generation sensors and platforms.
  • Leading service providers offering insights, experience and recommendations for new algorithms and instrumentation.
  • Petroleum and mining companies with an immediate need for innovative technologies.

This diverse, interconnected, and complementary group has led to cutting-edge research and development in exploration and monitoring, resulting in highly productive outcomes year after year.
